“Lucy and Lola, the two of them together in this bathroom, are all they’ve got. They have to survive tonight, and then they have to live.” – Melissa Scrivner Love, Lola
Live another day. That’s the name of the game for Lola and the Crenshaw Six, an up and coming gang in Los Angeles. Ask anyone who’s running the show and they’ll answer that it’s Garcia, Lola’s boyfriend. But once you get hooked into Melissa Scrivner Love’s masterpiece of a novel, you’ll know that it’s Lola who’s calling all the shots to take their gang to the next level – even if that means lying, stealing, and murder.
Lola is beautifully written – every character and movement etched with incredible detail and a story line that keeps you guessing until the very end. The author is a former writer for TV crime series and her talent shows in every sentence. I particularly loved the deep and intertwined personal backstories of all of the characters and how those pieces of their past come back to play huge influences in their lives. In addition to a flat out phenomenal story, the revealing exploration of gang life will give you a new perspective on an often closed-off concept and way of life.
For anyone looking for a thrilling and intricate novel, Lola is the choice for you!
