When I Say “Never Again”

What happens when you say “never again”?

When I say “never again”, I see the faces of anguish, despair, and death that fill our history.

When I say “never again”, I connect myself to the powerful stories, strong values, and hopes of our ancestors.

When I say “never again”, I am transported back to Auschwitz-Birkenau, perpetually gray and somber.

When I say “never again”, I challenge myself to learn more about our past, to dig just a little deeper.

When I say “never again”, I do not relegate this impactful phrase to a simple slogan.

When I say “never again”, I empathize with the current struggles in our midst.

When I say “never again”, I show my communities that I care about their lives, and about our shared future.

When I say “never again” and then forget about it next week, I lose the battle against hatred and bigotry.

When I say “never again”, I remember.

When I say “never again”, I commit myself to justice, equality, peace, and to building a better and brighter future for all of us.

On this Yom HaShoah, and every day, what will happen when you say “never again”?
